Congratulations to BCRV for providing an excellent place to stay in Vancouver for 30 years. The park opened in
1986 the year of EXPO. Due to zoning delays, Ben & Dick van Dyk were hard pressed to complete the building
and landscaping before a wave of Expo visitors descended on the park for opening day, May 2nd. Within the
first few days of opening, the park was completely filled by visitors and stayed completely full until EXPO
ended in October.
The EXPO guests were delighted with the new facility that features an indoor pool, Jacuzzi for soaking those
aching sightseeing muscles, a TV room where "visiting Expo strategy meeting were held nightly". The RV
sites held promise for the future. Although the sites were paved and landscaped (5,000 hedging plants) the
plants were only 2 feet high. The trees were definitely no hindrance to seeing and visiting with your RV’ing
neighbours. A 46 passenger school bus brought guests to and from the EXPO site. Due to the reservation
service the Burnaby Cariboo RV Park was working with, most visitors were from Southern California. A very
large percentage of those early visitors were in Canada for the first time. They were delighted with
Vancouver and promised to come back.
And come back they did. Every year (even last year) we welcomed returning EXPO guests to BCRV. Of course many
physical changes have taken place at the park as it has matured. The hedges are neatly trimmed and contained at a
7 foot height providing privacy. The flowering trees provide a canopy of flowers in spring. The Rhododendrons and
Azaleas at the sites and along the building greet the visitors with an array of colour and wonderful scents. The
Skytrain now runs within walking distance of the RV park. The services have also changed to meet our guests needs.
An unanticipated number of tenting guests, looking to stay in a first class property, prompted the addition of a
separate tenting area. The area features a Gazebo with hot water for washing dishes and seating for approx. 36
guests, defined tenting spaces with a granite picnic table at each site. Tour groups and caravans (such as Creative
world who has returned to the park every year since EXPO) and the RVOABC prompted building of an even larger Gazebo
with a BBQ and grill behind the club house. Our international visitors' need to return their rental RV cleaned,
prompted the building of a hot water/pressure system RV wash.
In 1988, to meet the needs of a more varied visitor, BCRV became the first RV park to install instant telephone hook-up
at its RV sites. In those days, it involved our staff actually going to a telephone room and hooking-up the site phone
line with the switchboard's line. Although outgoing calls could be made at any time, incoming calls were manually
transferred to the guest's extension on the switchboard. (Since our front desk staff has always finished their day
at 10:00PM, no incoming calls other than emergency calls were handled after that). Then along came voice mail.
BCRV installed one of the first voice mail systems in Canada.(For those of you who dislike voice mail - sorry).
This meant telephone service, in and out, was a 24 hour a day option. All 100 telephone lines leading to about half
the 217 RV sites were in hot demand. Then, along came cell phones and the need for telephone service at the sites
plummeted. As you can see in the past Brochures that we went from an address and phone number to include fax #'s, 1-800 #'s,
web and email adresses.
Since EXPO, even the RV sites have changed. The EXPO vintage RV did not have slide outs. Today's RV, as you know,
may have any number of them. The doors on an RV were fairly standard in location. On today's RV's that is not so.
BCRV's site adjustments were handled by creating patios at most of the parks sites. In more recent years, BCRV has been
replacing 3 18 foot sites with 1 site that is 45+ feet and are 7 feet wider than the past. Our guests are delighted with
them. Today's RVer is more fitness conscious then the EXPO visitor was. So, a fitness room was created. Although
the Brunette River runs past the park adjoined by a beautiful walking trail and Burnaby Lake is across the street with
4 1/2 miles of walking trails, the fitness room is well used.
Our returning EXPO guests are delighted to find that BCRV is still owned and operated by the van Dyk Family. Flora (who managed
the store until retiring 2006) greeted guests from the beginning. Kim has managed the building and improvement of the
facilities since EXPO. Behind the scenes, Harriet (retired 2014) ensured a cohesive customer service program, daily tour pick-ups,
a well stocked store, etc. Much thanks needs to be given to the many University students who have worked at the
park over the years. Most for a 4 to 5 year term while preparing for their careers. 6 of the current Reception staff have a combined
total 39 years, and 2 of the maintance staff over 29 years. Together, the staff has endeavoured to create a welcoming place to stay while visiting the Vancouver area. We hope to welcome you in the
near future.
